In order to understand the remainder of this blog, it is helpful to have a basic understanding of how Elasticsearch calculates a score that is used to order the documents returned by a query.
Before scoring documents, Elasticsearch first reduces the set of candidate documents by applying a boolean test that only includes documents that match the query. A score is then calculated for each document in this set, and this score determines how the documents are ordered. The score represents how relevant a given document is for a specific query.
